Ebrahim Patel –
A Pioneer of Rugby Unity.
Ebrahim Patel was a visionary leader and the first president of the South African Rugby Football Union (SARFU). As a driving force behind rugby unity in South Africa, he played a pivotal role in bringing together the country’s divided rugby structures. In 1992, he co-led the historic unification of South African rugby, working alongside Dr Danie Craven to merge the previously segregated rugby unions.
Beyond his administrative leadership, Patel was a passionate advocate for non-racial rugby, engaging in critical negotiations with global and national leaders, including the banned ANC, to ensure equal opportunities for all players. His efforts helped reshape the sport, creating a foundation for the inclusive rugby community we celebrate today.
An eloquent speaker and dedicated servant of the game, Patel’s influence extended beyond South Africa as he also served on the International Rugby Board (now World Rugby). His legacy as a champion of rugby unity, equality, and progression continues to inspire future generations.
Ebrahim Patel, born on 15 August 1943, dedicated nearly four decades of his life to rugby administration and social change. He passed away on 21 February 2022 at the age of 78, leaving behind a profound impact on South African rugby.
